Why cant i connect to the internet on windows xp read desc.?

hey i got a new computer and its a windows xp. Im using a windows 7 right now and my dlink works perfectly. When i plug in the dlink on the windows xp nothing happens. The dlink desnt light up or flash. I know that its pluged in because it makes a sound but nothing else really happens. please help and if u can help me further could u leave ur email here
