How did the Union win the Civil War?

The Battle of Palmito Ranch took place in May, 1865. By that time, Confederate Generals Lee and Johnston had surrendered to Union Generals Grant and Sherman, the Confederate government had collapsed, and Confederate President Jefferson Davis was under arrest. The war was over. Historians regard the Battle of Columbus as the last battle of the Civil War. They consider Palmito Ranch a post-war battle.
